NAGANO

I forgot to write about Nagano! It is almost spring now, so I’m sorry for winter photos. But Nagano is beautiful place and I would love to share about it! We went to Nagano by bus from Shinjuku, and rented a car in Nagano station. It takes 3.5 hours from Shinjuku to Nagano by bus and the cheapest one way ticket is 1500 yen.

〇Snow Monkey Park / Jigokudani Monkey Park(地獄谷野猿公苑/スノーマンキーパーク)
This place is very popular for seeing wild monkeys bathing in a natural hot spring. It is located in the monkey’s natural habitat, in the forests of the Jigokudani valley in Yamanouchi, not far from the onsen towns of Shibu and Yudanaka. Though they are wild, the monkeys come to the park throughout the year. They walk freely around the visitors, we enjoyed watching them. There were some baby monkeys and they were so cute! We wanted to see many monkeys that were bathing in onsen(hot spring), but only one monkey in onsen.. We would like to stay longer and wait for monkeys to enter the onsen, but unfortunately we didn’t have a much time. Even though we didn’t see many ice covered monkeys in the onsen, we could still enjoy a lot!

〇Togakushi shrine(戸隠神社)
In this time, we wanted to see beautiful snowy cedar trees and went to Togakushi shrine.Togakushi Shrine consists of 5 shirine known as a lower, a middle and an upper shrine (Togakushi Hōkō-sha, Hino-miko-sha, Togakushi Chū-sha, Togakushi Oku-sha and Kuzuryu-sha) in the forested mountains. This shrine is said to date back over 2000 years. When entering the shrine grounds you are greeted by a big torii gate with, behind that gate, a 2 km long lane of towering cedar trees leading the way to the shrine. It takes about 15minutes from the entrance to the cedar trees area.15 minutes walk in snow is not so easy, so I reccomend to wear snow boots when you visit here in winter. These cedar trees are more than 400 years old. In winter, the cedar trees are covered with snow and the snowy scenery really took my breath away! It was quiet and peaceful moment. I would like to visit here in summer and see more detail because we got lot of snow and could not see all part of the shine.

〇Matsumoto castle(松本城)
Matsumoto Castle is one of the most complete and beautiful among Japan’s original castles. This Castle has become a National Treasure as the oldest extant five structure/six story castle in Japan. Matusmoto castle was built in 16 century🏯Unlike many of the castles in Japan which had to be rebuilt after the war, this one is original. There are steep steps to the 6 floors of the castle and climbing the stairs was unique experience. If you go to Matusmoto castle in winter, extra socks are essential because the floor was very cold. Because of the elegant black walls, Matsumoto Castle is sometimes called Crow Castle. Matsumoto castle is must vist place in Nagano!
